Marty Friedman's playing on the Megadeth records made him a piece of heavy metal royalty, with his insane exotic arpeggio use blazing all over tracks through his time with the band... but what makes his arpeggio playing tick, and how can we emulate those sounds in our own playing? And how can we better learn these tricks so that we can master solos to classic songs like Tornado of Souls, Hanger 18, and Killing Road? On Weekend Wankshop 331, Uncle Ben Eller here is giving you all the ULTIMATE Marty Friedman Arpeggio Primer! We're gonna talk shapes, picking technique, theory, harmony, application, phrasing, the whole 9 yards! How does he get those exotic and middle eastern sounds? You're about to find out!

How do you describe Marty? He was playing with Paul Gilbert, and Paul asked ''what key are you in?'' Marty said ''I'm not in any key'' Paul said '' I just want to jam in A'' so the conclusion is be like water. If it feels right, go with it.

One of the reasons why I keep coming back to this video other than the fact that it's marty friedman, like arpagios... This is one of the most fabulous lessons in picking, even though you're not talking that much about it. First of all, I tend to overpick everything. This is a way to keep me if i'm having more pain in my wrist from overpicking. Secondly, the overhead microphone you're using, so we can hear you talk and hear the amplifier than that. There's also picking up the physical amount of pressure that you're putting into the pick when you know you are playing. When you want that note stressed we can hear the pick being engaged on the string deeper. So that it actually grinds across that string a little bit before the string flings off of the edge of the pick, making it a louder impact sound and therefore helping to stress that note. Then there are the times that you pick, it's so very precise that it seems that you're just barely touching the very tip of your pick to pick the string and it's not quite as loud, but it is very much accurate.

Thank you for blessing us with your knowledge and wisdom, Uncle Ben. The Abasi Larada 6 string looks like sucha dream to play! What I usually opt for when trying to replicate the 'Friedman' sound, is sequencing a minor arpeggio with a minor 6 and a major 9 in it, and for even more spice, a major arpeggio with a flat 6 and/or flat 9.

I always knew Marty went about it different than most metal players he always sounds more exotic and interesting to me and I love those sliding arpeggios when I get them down I feel like I’m cheating they sound so impressive but aren’t that difficult but sound impressive as fork .

This is approaching an E altered chord also. The altered chords get used in jazz and fancy blues. Might be interesting to experiment with that in a metal setting.

What a great lesson man the Am also sounds like the relief part with the other two chords creating such tension. So much more than just the Marty arp. And that guitar is ugly but beautiful.

My favorite Marty's solo? I'd say "Tornado of Souls" but the absolutely legendary and best Marty's solo for me is the one from "Symphony of Destruction."

@@BenEller I know, I watch them over and over again when I want to listen those solos played properly!
Btw. Did you ever think about joining Megadeth? Seriously, you are virtuoso and for you I'd go back to listening to Megadeth, the "modern" Megadeth, so to say. I don't want to be offensive but Kiko... Meh.

I’m always impressed by how relaxed you look when you play and it really adds to how easy you make difficult stuff look. Any quick advice on how you maintain your cool when practicing and bringing this stuff up to speed? You obviously have years of experience and muscle memory to help you get there quicker. Do you find you’re keeping a light touch with the fret hand and pushing a bit harder with the picking hand?

Hey and to add on for ya, Keeping a light touch on the fretting hand is good to keep in mind, but also sometimes it's important to really punch those frets. Just something I've learned over time. And picking really hard is great for the note dynamics. For me, picking hard works good for alternate picking most of the times, But with sweeps etc I tend to go lighter on the pick attack. Also (for me) it's extremely important to use absolute correct playing techniques at a slower pace to build muscle memory, like only using the wrist and no forearm for picking, arms to the side and relaxed. 🤘🔥
